Uganda: Benefits of manageable family sizes

September 29th 2012

Ugandans have been called upon to have a small and managable family. According to Population Secretariat officials, the high poverty numbers are due to loss of production time and the numerous expenses on managing the large families across the country. Quoting the Poverty report of 2011, the national Programs Officer at the Population Secretariat Isaiah Mbuga says that unless Ugandans embrace family planning methods they might not escape the poverty.

According to the report 31% of Ugandans especially from the rural side are still living below the poverty line. The UN puts the poverty line at two dollars per day per person. Those who cannot spend two dollars per day are believed to be below the poverty line.
