Writing a will ensures your wishes are respected and your loved ones are taken care of. Yet many people put it off, thinking it’s complicated or expensive. Our free will services remove those barriers, making it easier than ever to take this important step.
Choose the option that suits you
Anyone over the age of 18 can access our free will-writing services to write a simple will. We’ve partnered with two trusted providers so you can write your will in a way that works best for you:
- In person, through our partner, the National Free Wills Network, you can write your will in person with a local solicitor. Just click on the “Write your will in person” button below, complete the form, and one of the team will be in touch with the necessary details.
- Online, with our partner MyIntent, you can create your will from the comfort of your own home. Click on the “Write your will online” button below to start writing your will today. Once you have recorded your circumstances and wishes, you can also book a free 30 minute call with a regulated law firm who will prepare your will and can provide you with legal advice.
Both options are straightforward, secure, and completely free to you.

Leave a legacy that reflects your values
While there is no obligation, many people who use our free will services choose to leave a gift to Population Matters. These gifts play a vital role in helping us work towards a more sustainable future, supporting initiatives that balance global population growth with the health of our planet.
After you’ve provided for loved ones, even a small percentage of your estate can make a lasting difference.
why it matters
By planning today, you’re not only protecting your future, you’re helping to safeguard the future of generations to come. Gifts in wills enable long-term change, supporting education, advocacy, and solutions that address the pressures facing our planet.

frequently asked questions (faqs)
Who is eligible to use the free will service?
Our free will-writing services are available to UK residents aged 18 or over. Availability may depend on your location and the provider you choose.
Is it really free?
Yes. Population Matters covers the cost of a standard simple will through our partners. If your circumstances are more complex (for example, involving trusts or overseas assets), there may be costs you will need to pay. Your chosen provider will explain any costs before you choose how you wish to proceed.
Do I have to leave a gift to Population Matters?
No. There is no obligation to include a gift in your will. However, we are incredibly grateful to the many supporters who choose to do so as a way of continuing their impact into the future.
What kind of gift can I leave?
You can leave:
- A residuary gift (a percentage of your estate)
- A pecuniary gift (a fixed sum of money)
- A specific gift (such as an item of value)
Your solicitor or will writing professional can help you decide what’s right for you.
Can I update my will later?
Yes. You can update your will at any time, either by creating a new will or adding a codicil (an amendment). It’s a good idea to review your will regularly, especially after major life events.
Will inheritance tax affect my gift?
Gifts to registered charities like Population Matters are exempt from Inheritance Tax in the UK. In some cases, leaving 10% or more of your estate to charity may even reduce the overall rate of Inheritance Tax applied to your estate.
How do I get started?
Getting started is simple. Choose the option that suits you – either a local solicitor through the National Free Wills Network or the online service with MyIntent, and follow the step-by-step guidance.
*Solicitors may have different criteria for what qualifies as a simple Will.
