Empower to Plan – Transforming lives, shaping futures

Empower to Plan, our small grants programme, supports grassroots projects on family planning, sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, environmental sustainability, and related themes. As we open the application cycle for this year, join us as we look at some of the fantastic partnerships we’ve forged in recent years.

In a world where access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) remains a challenge for many and environmental sustainability feels distant, our Empower to Plan programme supports grassroots organisations tirelessly addressing these pressing issues. Over the years, we have championed numerous initiatives worldwide, empowering communities, especially women and adolescents, by equipping them with the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions about their well-being and the planet’s health.

From conflict-ridden South Sudan to the biodiverse landscapes of Colombia, our support has empowered organisations to create transformative change:

In South Sudan, amid the conflict in the neighbouring Sudan, our Empower to Plan partner, NWERO stands as a steadfast support for communities facing violence and displacement. Prioritising gender justice and the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV), NWERO utilised Empower to Plan funds to implement various community engagement and education initiatives. This empowered vulnerable adolescents and women to understand their rights, break the cycle of poverty and inequality, and find hope and support during difficult times.

In Kenya’s bustling slums like Kibera and Korogocho, AWOCHE Foundation, with the help of Empower to Plan funds, is raising awareness about SRHR and fostering environmental consciousness. By mentoring adolescents and cultivating a cadre of SRHR and environmental ambassadors, they are laying the groundwork for sustainable change within these communities.

Across the globe in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, The Awakening has been empowering marginalised women for over a decade. Empower to Plan has supported them in challenging taboos and fostering a culture of empowerment and equality through open dialogue and engagement with various community stakeholders. Their efforts are paving the way for a brighter future and inspiring generations to come.

In Colombia’s biodiverse landscapes, our past Empower to Plan partner, Women for Conservation continues to bridge the gap between family planning and environmental conservation. Our support facilitated training initiatives and access to voluntary family planning methods, empowering women to take control of their futures while preserving the planet’s natural heritage.

Recognising the importance of family planning in women’s empowerment, Turimiquire Foundation in Venezuela has been tirelessly providing young people with the information they need to make informed decisions about their sexual health. Supported by Empower to Plan, they were able to scale their family planning programme, breaking down barriers and promoting a culture of empowerment and autonomy.
